Italy will travel to the World Cup in South Africa knowing whether or not Marcello Lippi be their coach beyond the finals.

FIGC (Italian FA) president Giancarlo Abete has revealed discussions over Lippi's days at the helm will take place, and reach a conclusion, before the tournament. It's a tactful plan to relieve pressure on the squad while they are fighting to defend their 2006 crown.

"Before we head to South Africa the future of Lippi will be decided," Abete told the press.

"We will be clear on this argument so that everyone can head to the World Cup with clear ideas.

"Lippi has given us great satisfaction and it will be difficult in South Africa."

Indeed, as he picked out the pre-tournament favourites, he listed a number of teams he believes are better placed than the Azzurri.

"There are teams who have shown they are better than Italy over the last three-and-a-half years," he added.

"There is Spain, Brazil, Germany and England."
